Upcoming Skypark Event in Gatlinburg Features Rucksack Circus Highlining

The Gatlinburg Skypark is hosting an event on March 21 and 22. The Skypark and Red Bull Event main feature will be the Highline Show from the Rucksack Circus Highline crew. Other activities that will be in full swing include free Red Bull tastings, giveaways, live music, a live face painting, caricature artist, and balloon art.

The Rucksack Circus team enjoyed record attendance in 2020. And after taking off 2021, they also smashed records again in 2022. Members of this daring group will perform on a slack line that runs parallel to the Skybridge, which is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in the country. The performers will walk along their line 150 feet above the valley floor and 225 feet across the city side of the bridge. Incredible stuff you have to see with your own eyes!

Highlining is actually a relatively safe activity—if you can imagine—where performers walk across a line of webbing made of nylon and polyester. This differentiates from traditional tightrope. With highlining, the tension is rigged lower, causing the line to swing and bounce easier. And that gives performers leeway for more active movements across the line. Another difference is the lack of a balance pole and stabilizing lines, making this a fun, unique way to witness their talent.

The main Red Bull event will be on Friday, March 22 from 10-3, but the Rucksack Circus performers will also be performing on Thursday, March 21, but without the cool stuff for the whole family that’s listed above.

Are you ready to be awed by the amazing performances in store at this scenic Gatlinburg attraction? I’ll have to remember to look up during the highlining event. I’m not quite sure it will be visible from spots downtown, but this is quite the spectacle worth a look.
