The Top 4 Spots in Downtown Gatlinburg for Relaxation
I know what some of you are thinking right now. Downtown Gatlinburg? Do you mean the same tourist town where I just spent hours in a crowded strip of sidewalk with thousands of others who thought this was a good idea? Yes, in fact, I do mean this Gatlinburg. You may find more faults with the excessive crowds (at times) than you do with the positives (which are plenty, by the way), but with a little exploring and research, you can find some real peaceful places to take a break and relax. That’s exactly what this post is all about. Here are the best spots in downtown Gatlinburg for relaxation.
4. Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler
Now hear me out – I’m not referring to the actual tasting area and store. If you’ve visited, you know that a great secondary (or primary for some) activity is sitting in the rocking chairs at the Ole Smoky Moonshine Holler. Here you can sit in peace between or during the seemingly constant lineup of bands that take the stage to perform in front of dozens of people resting their legs and enjoying a break from the elbow rubbing on the Parkway. Music or no music, it deserves a spot on this list for relaxation.
3. River Road
River Road is named after the Cliff Branch River that runs alongside it. Whether you’re staying at a hotel here that overlooks this soothing stream, or you’re taking a walk any time of day, there’s no denying the calming effect it has on a person looking for it. I’ve seen people fishing, skipping rocks, or just sitting by the river taking in the wonderful white noise of a rushing stream of water. It’s actually my wife’s new favorite reading spot in town. You will rarely find many people at all in this area. It’s a solid win for your blood pressure and perspective on life.
2. By the Fountain in The Village
The Village is an iconic destination in Gatlinburg, and has been for more than 50 years. The fountains may have changed over the years, but the peaceful aura that surrounds it remains a constant. This is home base for many that have spent hours shopping and walking around Gatlinburg during the day. I’m sure millions have had their picture taken, or snapped one for themselves at this special place. While it can be a busy place, I like to find my peace here in the early morning hours where I can enjoy a famous Donut Friar cake donut, or pastry, and a Shot in the Dark coffee from Coffee and Company. Nothing beats starting the day here. You combine that with its convenient location, you have a winner.
1. Anakeesta
The real winner may be a bit controversial, but I’m going with Anakeesta. Sure it’s not technically downtown, but the entrance can only be reached from here, so I’m going with it. I don’t believe there are any better mountain views from downtown Gatlinburg than are found here. Glorious, relaxing, peaceful, calming, are all adjectives to describe the views at Anakeesta. You can add emotional, because if you’re really struck by the moment, don’t be surprised to find this one blanket you. There are chairs, benches, and the astonishingly beautiful Anavista Tower that encourage you to just sit and let the mountains work their magic on you. Even though we don’t live in the area yet, we annual pass holders. It’s just too good, and it’s deserving of my top ranking.
I hope I convinced a few of you to explore some of these options if you think Gatlinburg is too touristy and not a place to be explored for a relaxing vacation. Most of you won’t be swayed into thinking this way, but hopefully you can understand that there’s plenty to love about this town anyway.
