After a three year hiatus, the Mountain Life Festival is returning to the Smoky Mountains on September 23rd. The event will be held at the Mountain Farm Museum at Oconaluftee Visitors Center from 10 until 4 in the afternoon. That day will also be a fee free day in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
The day is eventful because it celebrates National Public Lands Day. This particular event in the Smokies honors this by preserving the different customs of Appalachian life that generations of families held firm before the government set aside the land for public use.
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park released a statement that described the day’s activities. They explain the cooperation that existed between friends and neighbors, and visitors will learn how they lived by interacting with historians and demonstrations. The things we take for granted they had to tediously work at, which included, sorghum milling, apple cider pressing, and soap making. The activities are all free to the general public.
We’ve been to the Mountain Farm Museum once before and found it fascinating and full of historical accounts and artifacts on display. It is on Newfound Gap Road behind Oconaluftee Visitors Center just before reaching Cherokee, North Carolina. If you’d like more information on this event, call 828-497-1904.
If you will miss this event and want to take advantage of another fee free day in the Smokies, the last one of the year will be on Veterans Day, Saturday, November 11th.
