The Human Body is On Display Inside The Newest Attraction in Gatlinburg
The wonders of the human body are now on full display in the aptly named, Bodies Human attraction, which opened on December 13 next to the Space Needle on Airport Road in downtown Gatlinburg.
While the images may be a bit chilling, it is billed as a family attraction that invites guests to learn more about the wonders of the human body. In fact, you will see more than a dozen preserved bodies, featuring over 100 anatomical displays.
These specimens have been preserved through the process of plastination, which is a technique that preserves biological tissues, organs, or whole bodies by replacing their water and fat with plastics and polymers. This results in a specimen free of odors, also making them dry and durable.
Plastination is a method that has been used in countless other exhibits and as educational tools for students in medicine. Plastinated specimens are anatomically precise, easier to handle, and are being used to enhance MRI and CT scans, so the benefits of this process are potentially extremely expansive.
Dr. Gunther von Hagens first developed this technique in the year of my birth—1977—at Heidelburg University in Germany. His inspiration was born from watching medical students struggle with cadavers that were highly susceptible to decomposition at that time. His new way of preservation paved the way for more effective learning techniques, and now, for living humans with no interest in becoming a doctor, to gain the opportunity to see what they normally don’t have a chance to see with their own eyes.
I think this is a fantastic, and definitely different kind of attraction that can really be successful here in Gatlinburg. I mean, the Ripley’s Odditiorium has attracted many visitors by only scratching the surface of human achievement. With Bodies Human, you’ll be able to see the marvels of what makes us so advanced among all living organisms.
