Temporary Road Closures Beginning in The Smoky Mountains
News about road closures in the Smoky Mountains could affect traffic heading into and out of Gatlinburg the next couple of weeks.
The Gatlinburg spur will be doing single lane closures in both directions beginning Monday, August 14th through Thursday, August 17th between the hours of 7 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. They will also do the same the following week from Monday, August 21st through Thursday, August 24th.
National Park crews will be working on clearing debris, trimming trees, and mowing. So basically, this is common maintenance work that is nothing unusual during the year.
As always, you should always be wary of speeds, caution lights, and cones. Expect there to be added delays, especially during lunch hours when traffic into Gatlinburg begins to back up. Just a warning to those whose patience is tested.
The Alum Cave Trail is much less traveled to, but it’s still a popular location for hikers visiting the Smoky Mountains. It will be closed on August 16th to repair a bridge. If you are hiking to Mt. LeConte, you will need to access another trail. To find out information in the event you’re unaware of where to go, contact the Backcountry Office at 865-436-1297.
That was your heads up for the week. Sorry I’m a bit late on this, since today begins the spur closures, but hopefully it helps if you’re arriving later this week or next. Stay tuned as I give you news of events upcoming in town that may also affect your drive into beautiful Gatlinburg, Tennessee!
