Sun Record Company Diner Now Open in Gatlinburg
It was known for much longer that the newly revamped building which used to house All Sauced Up and Tin Roof was going to be Jason Aldean’s Restaurant and Bar. It came as a surprise to many who didn’t see another eatery opening on the first floor so soon. That restaurant is Sun Record Company Diner, making Gatlinburg its second location, in addition to the original Nashville location.
What’s funny is it contrasts with another classic breakfast standard, Pancake Pantry. The original Pancake Pantry opened in Gatlinburg, while its second location fond its home in Nashville a year later. Let’s spin the black circle and give you a little of what to expect from this new diner, which features traditional Southern breakfast and lunch options.
Sun Record Company Diner is eponymous for the company that put out Elvis Presley’s many hit records, launching the popularity of rock and roll, and making it a staple of pop culture in the 50’s and most of the 60’s. It’s influence, which mimics many elements of the blues, could be felt for generations that followed.
Now, let’s eat!
It appears the Gatlinburg location has a more expansive menu that includes lunch items, in addition to some differentiation in breakfast fare. In Gatlinburg, they offer visitors a Donut Sandwich with a pork patty, cheese, and fried egg between a sweet “bun.” The lunch menu has sections for Late Risers, Hearty Plates, plus Sandwiches & Wraps. It runs the gamet of a place that stays open later on weekends without giving you too many options. It’s focused and thematic, and I respect a restaurant that keeps it as simple as possible. I can’t help but be reminded of another Southern breakfast (or brunch) restaurant that didn’t last long in Gatlinburg. Of course I’m talking about Ruby Sunshine, which we visited once. We thought the food was flavorful, but the prices didn’t reflect portion. I will wait to judge Sun Record Company Diner until we visit. I think the problem with Ruby Sunshine was its upstairs location, limited hours, and competition with other more well-known traditional breakfast spots downtown. You know which ones I mean.
