Smoky Mountains Tourism Numbers Down in 2022, But Remain Strong
The Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited park in the country, and it is reflected by the large crowds that visit in the summer and fall. Recently, the numbers were released showing just how many people visited in 2022. In 2021 a record 14.1 million came to see the beautiful Smoky Mountains. Let’s find out just how many were recorded last year.
If not for the flood of people who came with their stimulus checks and vacation money after COVID lockdowns were eased, 2022 might have been the busiest ever; instead, it was the second largest number since they started recording visitation numbers in 1931.
The number was just a shade under 13 million, at an official 12.9 million visitors. I remember thinking and saying there’s no way the 14 million from 2021 would be topped, and for this year, I am right. I try to keep a close eye and ear on what’s going on on here, whether it’s from locals or tourists. I heard that Spring Break and July 4th weekend were surprisingly slower than usual last year, but again, when you compare it to the previous year, it’s understood.
Here is a chart that breaks down the attractions, restaurants, and lodging revenues every year since 2014. Note: 2022 isn’t included in the list.
Of course, the big story that will interesting to watch, which could impact the numbers in 2023, is the new Park It Forward program already in effect. For those that aren’t aware, the Park Service is making people pay if you are parked for at least 15 minutes in any area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The fees are $5 for a day, $15 a week, or $40 for a yearly pass that needs to be visibly displayed inside your vehicle or on your window. More information can be found their website.
Are you surprised. I figured tourism would still be very strong, because I see it too, in our two or three visits per year. I think it’s safe to say, despite the pay to park program, visitation will continue to flourish. With all the new additions planned for Gatlinburg, the interest probably will motivate people to spend their money here.
