Ole Smoky Distillery Rolls Out Its New Bourbon Nationwide
Ole Smoky Moonshine in Gatlinburg has been sampling its Straight Bourbon Whiskey for months at its downtown distilleries, but soon it will be in stores nationwide. This Tennessee Whiskey is barrel-aged for four years and expands its already large selection of beverages.
This bourbon is described as having a rich, warm taste, with hints of smoke, char, and caramel. It’s bottled at 80 proof and has a wooden cork stopper—a favorite of many bourbon lovers. If I’m not mistaken, it’s priced from $35-$40 for a 750ml bottle at the distillery.
This will be their second premium whiskey product. James Ownby Reserve was the first, and I can vouch for the quality of this one. I tried it not long after it was released a few years back while on vacation. I was happy to purchase it using my taste vouchers and discount coupon. JOR is bottled at a higher proof—94—and if you’re a fan of the charcoal filtering that makes it a genuine Tennessee whiskey, you’ll love this. I remember the tasting notes being fruit forward, reminding me of red berries along with the familiar vanilla and caramel you taste with many other bourbons. This is still only available in select markets, and of course, the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge distilleries.
If you follow me regularly on Facebook, you’re aware of how much I love Sugarlands Distilling Co. in Gatlinburg. But aside from how I feel about Ole Smoky raising their prices for tastings—$7 for a regular, and a $10 premium one, featuring the new Popcorn Sutton brand—I respect them. I also feel like they do a good job with their flavored whiskeys and creams. For instance, their Snow Cream is every bit as good as Sugarlands’ new Sippin’ Cream, Birthday Cake. If you come to Gatlinburg to do a little sampling, I still think Ole Smoky has to be one of your stops…along with Sugarlands, of course!
