Many memories have been made of this iconic transport vehicle. Hard to imagine looking up toward the Smoky Mountains and not seeing the Ober Mountain (Gatlinburg) tram sliding from the cables in the air. Well, it has been 50 years since its maiden voyage filled with passengers to the only true ski resort in Tennessee.
It was constructed with the benefit of a safer and more comfortable means of traveling up to Ober Mountain. If you didn’t want to drive, you could pay for the experience of a lifetime. Holding as many as 120 passengers, you will soar as high as 300 feet over the ground and reach an elevation of 2,800 feet above sea level.
What’s in it for you? The first 500 people to ride the Aerial Tramway will receive a free gift of appreciation with your tram ticket or wristband. I have not a clue what this will be, but it seems you’ll want to find out and get your place in line on August 5th when they open at 9:30.
Their newest adventure is mountain biking. They have instructors and different levels of difficulty from the beginner to the expert rider. While you’re here, hop on and get a fantastic view of nature and challenge yourself for something that’s unique to this area. You don’t have to be an outdoor enthusiast to participate!
Additionally, Ober Mountain has been hard at work making this a better experience for all visitors. Entertainment is one such aspect. The Grateful Dead tribute band, Cosmic Charlie, will be playing the timeless tunes of the iconic jam band that should appeal to Deadheads and casual listeners alike. They will be rocking Ober Mountain on August 11th and 12th!

Planning a visit soon? This should be a grand celebration of fun and games for all ages. Unfortunately, we’ll miss the 50-year party and Cosmic Charlie, as we’ll likely be still unpacking and getting settled. If you’re interested and will be here, why not try to fit these activities into your itinerary, adding excitement to your Gatlinburg vacation!
