A few weeks ago I posted a random photo on Facebook of Gatlinburg’s Mysterious Mansion—a place we never visited—and it received a good bit of attention. Well, as it turned out, the amount of engagement this post attracted was warranted. Recently, it was announced this haunted house made the number five spot in a list of the scariest ones in the entire United States, according to Yelp. I don’t know about you, but regardless of where it came from, that’s some pretty awesome company it shares.
The list was compiled by pinpointing businesses in the haunted house category. It factors in the sheer number of reviews, in addition to how reviewers ranked the scary properties. Gatlinburg’s Mysterious Mansion has been frightening guests since 1980, and it is the only Tennessee haunted house in the Top 20 Yelp list.
If you are unfamiliar with the experience—as am I—it is a self-guided tour of an early twentieth century three-story mansion with secret passageways, serpentine staircases, and dark hallways to scout. The unsettling aspect includes the fact you never know what’s around any corner, so be prepared for the ultimate scare that could be in front or behind you!
While Gatlinburg’s Mysterious Mansion is open year-round, there’s no better time to go than the days and weeks leading up to Halloween. When you walk by, the anticipation of the prospect of going inside itself is an eerie sensation, especially with the “music” being piped from the speakers.
It’s located just beyond the Edgewater Hotel from the Aquarium on River Road in Gatlinburg. With it being so close to Halloween and having its eerie glow, it’s getting difficult to miss, but you could be forgiven if you’ve walked past and not noticed at other times during the year. You can check prices in the link at the beginning of this post.
Are you in the spirit of Halloween and want to be spooked? Look no further than this Gatlinburg landmark! Thank you for reading and subscribing, and maybe one day we’ll make our maiden Mysterious Mansion scare!
Back in the 90's, a black hearse sat in the driveway and Freddy Kruger was in the top window. A must see while visiting.
Was the scariest experience for me and my best friend. Almost at the end of the self-guided tour of this house we were chased by a man with a chainsaw. Once outside of the house, we were sitting on some benches and asked the others that came out after us how they got passed the guy with the chainsaw. You see, we never made it all the way through. We exitted out one of the fire escape doors. Once we asked them they just looked at us and said, " What guy with the chainsaw?" Needless to say me and my friend never slept that whole night wondering if that was part of the tour. Not to mention that our hotel was on the same street as the haunted house and we could hear the organ music that plays at the house all night. So if you visit please don't take any small kids.
