Gatlinburg is going green once again in 2025 by honoring Irish heritage during the week of St. Patrick’s Day. The dates you’ll be seeing grand amounts of green are set for March 10-17.
In case you’re not aware of the phrase, “Erin go bragh,” it is used as a show of loyalty and pride to Irish culture. The literal translation is “Ireland until doomsday” or “eternity.” It was first recorded during the Irish rebellion of 1798, in which rebels put it on their flags as a rallying cry for independence from Britain. Sounds familiar, right?
Throughout the past 200+ years, the phrase has been used on countless causes in support of Irish rights across various platforms. In sport, the Edinburgh football club, Hibernian F.C., adopted it as their motto. It was even used as the title of a 19th century song, and as recently as 1969, it was the title of another tune that told of the Easter Rising in Dublin—a 1916 insurrection that was also referenced in “Zombie” from the rock band, The Cranberries, in 1994.
Now that you have that brief history lesson, let’s get back to Gatlinburg. Yes, the tourist town will be lined with the flags of Ireland, so you may feel like you came to Ireland, which is especially true when you visit the Old World charm in The Village. Individual businesses will also get in the Irish fervor during the week of St. Patrick’s Day.
If you’re into the whole green beer aspect, many bars and businesses will offer your favorite pint of suds in the food-coloring tinge. There is no more perfect place downtown than Boudicca’s Celtic Pub to celebrate the Shamrock green holiday. You can already hear popular Irish bands in this little hole-in-the-wall pub on the daily, so you can get in full garb, gobble some excellent grub, and have yourself a “craic.”
Will you be in Gatlinburg during St. Patrick’s Week? If you are, I hope you have an excellent time, as long as you’re being responsible. It’s certainly tempting to let yourself go a bit, but let’s please exercise good judgment. I don’t need to tell you the consequences of going too far overboard, as we’re all adults here. Enjoy your time in our fine mountain town!
