Gatlinburg Trout Facility Reopens After Completing Renovations
The Gatlinburg Trout Facility located at Herbert Holt Park has been reopened after an extensive renovation project. The old facility was demolished, making way for the new one, and it also features a rebuilt of the raceways. These renovations were completed earlier this month, and this new facility is just a microcosm of the City of Gatlinburg’s dedication toward enhancing its recreational offerings and educational outreach.
The project began in April 2024 and included the following elements:
a complete rebuild of all six trout raceways
the construction of a pavilion to provide shade and prevent predators from accessing the fish
the addition of bleachers to accommodate educational programs
The desired goal was to modernize the facility and enhance its feasibility for all visitors, and that is what City Manager, Greg Patterson, seemed to echo upon the grand reopening of the trout facility.
“This renovation not only ensures the sustainability of fishing in Gatlinburg, which is a great tradition for many who visit our City, but also enriches educational opportunities and recreational experiences for all who visit Herbert Holt Park.”
This also allowed the City’s Recreational Department to begin restocking the trout in the West Prong of the Little Pigeon River that runs through Gatlinburg. The City is excited to host youth groups and other visitors, giving them a prime opportunity to learn about trout fishing and the programs they promote.
While fishing has never really been my thing, with the exception of a couple summers being tutored by one of my old school friends way back when, I do understand its allure, and I think it’s great to see young kids enjoying the outdoors and not glued to their phones. I respect it greatly, and it’s great to see the City of Gatlinburg improving its resources.
