All runners unite! The eleventh annual Gatlinburg Firefighters Association’s Fit for Duty 5K/10K run will be held on Saturday, March 30th at 9 a.m. This is another event that’s for a noble cause in Gatlinburg. The proceeds benefit the G.F.A.’s outreach programs, which include fire and life safety education programs in area schools. Also, they offer a firefighter summer camp for youths, as well as free smoke alarms and child seat safety programs.
The cost for the run is set for $25 for the 5K; $35 for the 10K. These prices are good until 10 p.m. on March 29th, but registration will be ongoing until 30 minutes before the event begins.
The course will start and end at the Gatlinburg Fire Department at 1230 East Parkway. There’s also an additional run of special note, which makes me gasp just thinking about it. The Firefighter’s Challenge 5K Race requires full turnout gear. What does this entail? Well, a turnout coat and pants with liners in, helmet, hood, and gloves. Boots aren’t required, but that doesn’t mean this won’t be a…well, challenge.
Whether you’re an avid runner looking to sign up for another 5K, or if you want to donate to a worthy cause, this certainly covers all participation levels. I would love to do another 5K, but you know what they say about a willing spirit. My body may not forgive me, especially after the Running of the Bears 5K in downtown Gatlinburg a few months ago. I may have to bite the bullet and be a walker. Pride is a hard thing to keep in check sometimes.
