This morning, crews from the Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge Fire Department were on the scene Wednesday morning for a kitchen fire at Dick’s Last Resort in downtown Gatlinburg. At 10:37, the fire was reported, and this led to the closure of the Parkway from light #6 (Cherokee Orchard Road) and the Gatlinburg Convention Center.
According to G.F.D. Assistant Chief, Wayne Brandenburg, the fire initiated in the kitchen and spread through the ventilation system attached to the deep fryer. It breached the roof of the structure, but Gatlinburg crews were able to suppress the fire quickly from the tower truck.
As for the consequences, the damages are being assessed, and there has been no word as to the extent of it, nor the time table for a reopening of Dick’s Last Resort, which sits perilously close to the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery. More information will be provided once we learn more.
There was one firefighter from the Gatlinburg Department who was transported from the scene for medical evaluation. Let’s hope this person is okay. That has been the only reported treatment or injury as a result of this kitchen fire, which was thankfully contained, resulting in the Parkway being reopened at 12:33 P.M.
The City of Gatlinburg and its residents are thankful for the tremendous job these brave souls do to make us all safe, while putting their safety at risk for this dangerous occupation. They deserve every bit of our gratitude, and I am extremely happy they take the necessary steps to ensure all of our safety, especially when the population multiplies during busy tourist times.
